Looking Ahead: Research Pathways From the Oxford Oath

On 22 and 23 September 2025, the Oxford Collaboration on Theology and Artificial Intelligence (OCTAI) convened its third major workshop: The Oxford Oath. Scholars, theologians, policymakers, technologists, and practitioners gathered to consider how a theologically grounded professional oath might guide those working at the frontiers of artificial intelligence.

The workshop was not only about drafting words; it was about envisioning how commitments can shape culture, practice, and accountability in the age of AI. As discussions unfolded, several avenues for future research came into focus.

The Way Forward

The Oxford Oath Workshop was a beginning, not a conclusion. By drawing on theology, philosophy, law, social science, and computer science, the conversation highlighted the unique contribution that a theologically informed oath can bring to the global AI ethics landscape.

The next phase must be one of collaboration: turning the workshop’s insights into research projects, pilot programs, and practical frameworks that ensure commitments of integrity move beyond aspiration to action.
